What determines a diamond buying offer?

The diamond and its grading

A grading report describes the stone’s carat weight, colour and clarity. Shape, cut quality and fluorescence also affect the estimate. Use the report for the individual diamond, rather than the combined carat weight of a ring.

Round brilliant diamonds and other shapes use different reference prices. The estimate also accounts for the grading report, cut and fluorescence.

The piece and today’s market

An assessment considers the actual stone, condition, documentation and market demand. A diamond set in a ring may also have a gold setting or other stones that the diamond calculator does not include.

The estimate is a starting point for a conversation. You decide whether to accept an offer after the piece has been assessed.

How to sell your diamond

  1. Share the details

Send the shape, carat weight, grading report and clear photos. Mention whether the diamond is loose or set in jewellery.

  2. Arrange an assessment

Contact the laboratory before visiting. Bring the piece and its documentation so the details can be checked.

  3. Consider the offer

Ask how the quote was determined and how long it applies. An appraisal and a purchase offer serve different purposes.

Questions about selling diamonds

How much can I sell my diamond for?

Carat weight, shape, colour, clarity, cut, fluorescence and grading documentation all affect an estimate. The calculator provides an indication in Canadian dollars. An assessment of the actual diamond is needed before a purchase offer.

Is the diamond calculator a guaranteed offer?

No. It uses reference diamond prices and grading adjustments, converted with the latest available USD/CAD exchange rate. The diamond price table is not a live market feed. Condition and current demand are considered during an individual assessment.

Can I sell a diamond without a GIA report?

Send the details and any documentation you have. The calculator includes GIA, EGL, AGS and other grading options. If you have no report or do not know a grade, request an assessment rather than guessing.

Can I use the calculator for lab-grown diamonds?

The calculator is for natural diamonds. For a lab-grown, treated or fancy-colour diamond, contact the laboratory to discuss suitability for an individual review.

Is a selling value the same as an insurance appraisal?

No. A purchase offer concerns a sale in the current market. An insurance appraisal provides a documented valuation for an agreed insurance purpose. An existing appraisal is useful background, but does not guarantee a resale price.
